How to use the hashtag generator

  1. Type your topic or keyword, like “boho bedroom decor”.
  2. Add context if you like: style, audience or season.
  3. Click Generate hashtags.
  4. Pick 2 to 5 that fit your pin best and add them to the end of your description.

Do hashtags work on Pinterest?

They matter far less on Pinterest than on Instagram. Pinterest finds and ranks pins mainly by the words in your title, description, board name and the page you link to. Hashtags are a small extra, so:

  • Use a few, not many. Two to five relevant hashtags are plenty.
  • Put them at the end of the description, never in the title.
  • Keep them specific. “#bohobedroom” tells Pinterest more than “#home”.
  • Don’t rely on them. A clear, keyword-rich description does most of the work.

Broad, specific and niche tags

Broad#homedecorOne general tag per pin, at most
Specific#bohobedroomYour main topic
Niche#rentalbedroommakeoverThe exact angle of this pin

The generator gives you all three, so you can mix them.

Better than hashtags: keywords

If you want your pins found, start with keywords. The Pinterest keyword tool shows what people search, and the title generator and description generator turn those keywords into pin text.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pinterest hashtag generator free?

Yes, with several free tries a day and no sign-up.

How many hashtags should I use on a pin?

Two to five relevant ones at the end of the description is plenty. More doesn’t help.

Can I use these hashtags on Instagram or TikTok too?

Yes, though those apps rely on hashtags more, so you may want a longer, platform-specific mix there.

Are hashtags the same as Pinterest tags?

Pinterest has used both over the years. Today, keywords in your title and description matter most, and hashtags are an optional extra.
