Paste your Etsy listing title, tags and the start of your description, and get an Etsy SEO score with a list of fixes. It checks Etsy’s character limits, keyword placement, duplicate and single-word tags, and whether your title and tags work together.
How to use the Etsy SEO tool
- Enter your main keyword: what a buyer would type to find this item, like “personalized dog collar”.
- Paste your listing title. The counter shows how much of Etsy’s 140 characters you’ve used.
- Paste your tags, separated by commas. Each one appears as a chip with its length, and tags over 20 characters turn red.
- Paste the first lines of your description.
- Fix the red items first, then the yellow ones.
What it checks
| Area | Rule |
|---|---|
| Title length | 140 characters at most. Short titles miss searches. |
| Keyword placement | Main keyword within the first few words of the title |
| Special characters | % : & + can each appear only once in an Etsy title |
| Repeated words | The same word more than twice wastes title space |
| Tag count | All 13 tags used |
| Tag length | 20 characters or less per tag |
| Duplicate tags | Singular and plural versions count as the same tag |
| Tag style | Mostly multi-word phrases, few single words |
| Title and tags | Your best phrases appear in both |
| Description | Keyword in the first 160 characters, which Google often shows |
How Etsy search reads your listing
Etsy matches a shopper’s search against your title, tags, categories and attributes, then ranks the matches using things like listing quality, customer experience and how recently the listing was updated. You can’t control everything, but you can make sure Etsy knows exactly what you sell.
That comes down to three habits:
- Use phrases buyers type. “Leather dog collar” matches more real searches than “collar” or “leather”.
- Cover different searches with different tags. Each tag is a chance to match another search, so don’t repeat the same phrase in small variations.
- Make your title and tags agree. When your best two or three phrases appear in both, Etsy is more confident the listing is a good match.
Writing a better title
Start with the phrase a buyer would search, then add the details that help them choose: material, style, size, color, occasion or who it’s for. Separate ideas with commas so the title still reads clearly.
Personalized Dog Collar, Leather Dog Collar with Name, Engraved Brass Buckle, Gift for Dog Lover
Choosing your 13 tags
- Mix what it is (leather dog collar), who it’s for (dog lover gift), when it’s used (new puppy gift) and style (rustic pet collar).
- Use the full 20 characters when a longer phrase is more specific.
- Skip words already covered by your category and attributes, like the color you selected.
- Don’t use the same word in every tag. Spread out to match more searches.
Promote the listing on Pinterest
Etsy listings do well on Pinterest, where people save gift ideas and products for later. Turn a listing photo into a clean product pin with the free Pinterest pin maker, then check its title and description with the Pinterest SEO checker.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Etsy SEO tool free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so your listing isn’t sent anywhere.
How many tags can an Etsy listing have?
13 tags, each up to 20 characters long. Using all 13 gives your listing more chances to match a search.
How long can an Etsy title be?

Your best two or three phrases should appear in both. The rest of your tags should cover other searches.
Does this tool connect to my Etsy shop?
No. Copy and paste your listing text into the tool. Nothing is connected or changed on Etsy.
