Open Graph Checker: Social Media Share Preview for Any Link

Paste any link to see its social media share preview on Google, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, WhatsApp, Slack and Discord. This free social share checker reads your Open Graph and X card tags, tests your share image, gives you a score with clear fixes, and writes the meta tags for you.

How to check your link preview

  1. Paste the page link and click Check link. We read the page the same way social networks do.
  2. Read your score. Red items stop your preview from showing properly, so fix those first. Yellow items are worth improving.
  3. Look at the previews for each network. Use the buttons above them to see one network at a time.
  4. Try changes in the edit box: a shorter title, a new description or another image. The previews update as you type.
  5. Copy the meta tags and add them to your page, or enter the same title, description and image in your SEO plugin.

No live page yet? Click type your title and image by hand and preview a link before you publish it. Images you upload stay in your browser.

One social tester for every network

Each network has its own debug tool, and some of them, like X, no longer show a preview at all. Checking one link means opening four or five sites. This social tester shows every preview on one page, side by side, so you can spot a cropped image or a cut-off title before anyone sees it.

It also works as a link preview checker for chat apps. WhatsApp, Slack and Discord all build their previews from the same Open Graph tags, so a link that looks right on Facebook usually looks right there too. The previews show you where it doesn’t.

What Open Graph tags are

Open Graph tags are short lines of code in the head of a web page. They tell social networks and chat apps which title, description and image to show when someone shares the link. Without them, each app guesses. It might use a logo, an ad, the first photo on the page, or no image at all.

The four tags that matter most:

  • og:title – the headline in the preview. Keep it under 60 characters.
  • og:description – one or two sentences under the title. Aim for 110–160 characters.
  • og:image – the picture. 1200 × 630 pixels works on every major network.
  • og:url – the main address of the page, so shares and likes count toward one URL.

X reads Open Graph tags too, but it also has its own twitter:card tag. Set it to summary_large_image to get a big image instead of a small square.

The best share image size

Use 1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 shape), saved as a JPG or PNG under 1 MB. That one size looks right on Facebook, X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and Discord.

  • Keep text in the middle. Some apps crop the edges, especially on phones.
  • Use large, bold words. Previews are small, and fine print won’t be readable.
  • Skip SVG and AVIF. Most networks can’t show them.
  • Make it small. Big files load slowly, and WhatsApp may skip them. Our image compressor shrinks them in your browser.

Pinterest is different. It shows images at their own shape, so a wide share image looks short in the feed. For Pinterest, make a tall 1000 × 1500 pin with our blog post to pin tool.

Why your preview shows the wrong image or title

  • The network saved an old copy. Facebook, LinkedIn and others cache previews for days. After you change your tags, ask them to read the page again with their own debug tools. Facebook has the Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn has the Post Inspector.
  • Your page cache is serving old HTML. Clear your site cache and your CDN cache after changing tags.
  • The image is blocked. Firewalls, hotlink protection or a login wall can stop networks from loading the image even though you can see it.
  • There’s more than one og:image. Many networks use the first one. Remove extras added by other plugins.
  • The image link is relative. og:image needs the full address, starting with https://.

Open Graph tags on WordPress

You don’t need to edit code on WordPress. SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast add Open Graph and X card tags for you. Set a featured image for each post or page, and the plugin uses it as the share image. To use a different title, description or image on social networks, open the plugin’s social settings in the editor.

After changing them, run your link through this checker again to make sure the new tags are live.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Open Graph checker free?

Yes. It’s free and needs no account. You can check up to 40 links a day, and previewing your own title and image is unlimited.

What size should my Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels, in a 1.91:1 shape, as a JPG or PNG under 1 MB. Anything below 600 × 315 may show as a small thumbnail.

Is this a social share counter?

No. It checks how your link looks when shared, not how many times it was shared. Most networks no longer make share counts public, so counters can’t report them reliably anyway.

Is this the same as a Twitter Card validator?

It does the same job. It checks your twitter:card and Open Graph tags and shows a preview of how the link looks on X.

Why does my link show no image when I share it?

The page usually has no og:image tag, the image link is broken or blocked, or the network still has an old copy cached. The checker tells you which one it is.

How long does it take for a new preview to show?

New links show the new tags right away. Links that were shared before can keep the old preview for days. Use the network’s own debug tool to refresh it.

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?

Not directly. Google ranks pages on their content and uses the title tag and meta description for search results. Good share previews get more clicks from social media, though, and that brings more people to your page.
